The Oberammergau Passion Play will be performed from May 14th to October 2nd, 2022. With 4,500 seats in the covered auditorium, the Oberammergau Passion Theater is the largest open-air stage with a covered auditorium in the world.

The Oberammergau Passion Play is the world’s most famous passion play. In a performance lasting several hours, the villagers of Oberammergau reenact the last five days of Jesus’ life. The passion play was performed for the first time in 1634 as a redemption of a vow after the plague had been overcome. A ten-year rhythm has applied since 1680, usually in the last year of a decade. The 2020 Passion Play, which was scheduled to run from May to October 2020, had to be canceled in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will now take place from May 14th to October 2nd, 2022.

The history of the Passion Play in Oberammergau began almost 400 years ago. The plague raged in many parts of Europe and did not stop at Oberammergau.

In order to put an end to the misery, the people of Oberammergau decided to take a vow. In 1633 they swore to perform the suffering and death of Christ every ten years, provided that no one dies from the plague. The village was heard and so the people of Oberammergau played the first passion play in 1634. The people of Oberammergau have kept their promise to this day. The Passion Play 2020 had to be postponed by two years due to the corona pandemic. Thus, the 42nd Passion Play will now take place from May 14th to October 2nd, 2022.
